School-run style: quick chic for autumn

School run style

No sooner do you dare to bask in the delights of an actual, proper summer (after so many false starts) than the fashion pack start bellowing about autumn must-haves.

But before we lament the shortest and sweetest of seasons passing, let’s remember that September signals a time for renewal and reflection. The kids will be back to school soon and the rhythm of daily life will return; many – including us – will welcome it. Plus, there’s no better excuse for wardrobe updates.

With that in mind, we spoke to Fran Bacon, one of our favourite bloggers – find her at The Fashion Lift – about her school-run style steals:

“The key to easy school-run style is a few items you can pull on in a millisecond, while trying to get the kids ready at the same time. My fail-safe pieces are a great pair of ankle-length blue jeans (my brand of choice is J Brand but I also love Zara and Topshop), a pair of comfy, cool trainers (I love Adidas Stan Smiths) and a fine knit or slogan sweater – I love Bella Freud.”

She’s also a firm believer in practical chic: “It’s a really good idea to invest in a light waterproof jacket with a hood (Zara, Topshop, Jack Wills and Petit Bateau always have fab styles). For non-rainy days a camouflage jacket is super useful – it goes with everything, looks great with a Breton and will give your look an edge. Finally, I always wear a quick sweep of bronzer and a slick of lipstick to make me look alive!”

Looking for easy-style pointers? Here’s our top five:

1. The throw-on dress

throw on dress

Pumpkin, burnt sienna and muted pinks were all over the autumn catwalk and flatter most complexions. Just a few key pieces will update staples beautifully and this fuss-free throw-on Finery Hallton cocoon shift (£65) will see you through the transitional months. Team with pumps and weather-appropriate deniers.

2. The art-school jeans

As the skinny jean swansong continues, patchwork denim is seeing something of a revival, along with more structured and hard-wearing designs. Think lived-in, not skin-tight and your new favourites will last a lifetime. These Levi 501s (£120) pair well with a slubby t-shirt and loose up-do, to complement that art-school vibe.

3. Dressed-up boho

A simple flash of elegant silver is all you need when you’re on the go and this Under the Rose birthstone bracelet (£39) – one for September babies – is beautifully crafted using lapiz lazuli beads to symbolise serenity and truth. It’s a luxe take on the ever-popular friendship bracelet and you can stack or wear alone for a clever mix of style and personality.

4. Shearling

Equal parts chic and practical, this trend will see you all the way through the colder months and beyond. If the thought of full throttle shearling sends you clamouring for the dry cleaner’s number, just limit to lapels or accessories. This Kara leather and shearling backpack (£405) is a fine example – and perfect for holding all your essentials.

5. New metallics

The sports-luxe trend continue apace – as do metallics – so why not combine the two? These Carvela platform loot leather trainers (£99) are sure to turn heads in the schoolyard.
